Happy Singles Awareness Day
So, Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday this year. We have a full day to be accosted by every vendor on the universe to buy something pink, red, sexy, chocolate, cuddly, and expensive-and there’s a heart on ev-er-ry-thing. If you’re not in a relationship, or otherwise having relations this evening, it’s more like Singles Awareness Day.
Admittedly, I’m the worst at Valentine’s Day gifts. I do a lot of my shopping last minute pretty much for every holiday. It’s taken me a couple of weeks to figure out what to gift him. At least that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Philip took a different approach this year. One that I really hope he remembers for-like-ever. He didn’t hold out to give me one big splashy gift for Valentine’s Day. He gave me something small every day of the week. A few things that I need, treats that I love (except the popcorn that was his favorite flavor…and that he kept by his work desk…pretty much devouring it all.), and sent flowers to the office. I ended up working from home that day, but he still gets credit.
There was very little emphasis on hearts and bows on anything. His thoughtfulness reminded me that it’s more important for me to put my heart in, and not on everything. I realize love is imperfect and occasionally a hot mess. But, when it’s real, and healthy, it feels like those chocolates being hocked in pretty boxes luscious, sweet, and delicious.
